There are several special situations and advanced rules that are important to understand for mastering Dutch articles.
Compound Words:
The last word in a compound word determines the article:
- de strand + de stoel = de strandstoel (beach chair)
- het zwem + de bad = het zwembad (swimming pool)
- de auto + het slot = het autoslot (car lock)
Verbs Used as Nouns:
When infinitive verbs are used as nouns, they always take "het":
- het lopen (walking), het zwemmen (swimming), het eten (eating)
- Het roken is gevaarlijk (Smoking is dangerous)
Geographic Names with Adjectives:
Cities, countries, and regions normally don't use articles, but when described with adjectives, they often take "het":
- Amsterdam → het mooie Amsterdam (beautiful Amsterdam)
- Nederland → het kleine Nederland (small Netherlands)
Words That Can Use Both:
Some words accept both articles with no difference in meaning:
- de/het deksel (lid), de/het matras (mattress), de/het pedaal (pedal)
The article "het" is also used before adjectives when they function as nouns:
- het mooie (the beautiful thing), het nieuwe (the new thing)
