Word Endings That Use "Het"

Just like with "de" words, many "het" words can be identified by their endings. These patterns are very helpful for predicting the correct article.

Words ending in these suffixes always use "het":

- Words ending in -isme: het racisme, het toerisme, het idealisme

- Words ending in -ment: het moment, het instrument, het document

- Words ending in -sel: het raadsel, het voedsel, het deksel

- Words ending in -um: het museum, het centrum, het album

- Words ending in -asme: het enthousiasme, het sarcasme

Two-syllable words starting with these prefixes usually use "het":

- Words starting with be-: het beleid, het begrip, het bewijs

- Words starting with ge-: het geluid, het gevaar, het gebied

- Words starting with ver-: het verhaal, het verslag, het verschil

- Words starting with ont-: het ontwerp, het onthaal, het ontbijt

Note: This prefix rule applies mainly to two-syllable words and doesn't work if the word ends in -ing!
